The newly released trailer for The Mandalorian has fans reacting.
You can watch it here:
The upcoming series that is set to be released on Disney plus, depicts a post-Empire world where bounty hunters roam. With stark imagery of stormtrooper heads, the trailer does not reveal much. However, by keeping the audience guessing that will only increase the appeal.
This begs the question: Will The Mandalorian win back disillusioned Star Wars fans? Bitterness from The Last Jedi still runs deep, and I doubt that Rise of Skywalker will be a spellbinding success for Disney.
That being said, it’s not all bleak for Mickey Mouse. Rogue One, as I recall, was enjoyed by many. People loved the dark tone, the war themes and Darth Vader’s cameo. Adding onto that, Rogue One was a self-contained story within one ‘episode.’ That means that all of the emotional highlights were experienced within two hours.
Also, Rogue One felt different and original. Gone are the heavy lightsaber battles or naive, heroic protagonists. There is nothing wrong with them, but sometimes, audiences like something different.
And The Mandolorian looks different. From the dark tone, to the mysterious characters- this story seems original.
If Disney wants to win back Star Wars fans, they must move away from the sequel trilogy, and focus on creating something new. In a few months, it’ll be 2020. Simply put, you can no longer get away with rehashing old plot points.
However, creating something ‘new’ may not be enough to save Star Wars. The fandom reaction against Disney is still strong at the moment. From the vocal YouTubers to petitions calling for Episode IX to be remade- it’s no secret that The Mandolorian may not be enough.
Only time will tell. I thought the trailer for The Mandalorian was terrific, and I’m excited about what is next for the Star Wars franchise.
