Scarlett Johansson’s Comments Apply To All Artists

Personally, I think it's about time someone as prominent as ScarJo commented on this issue.

Scarlett Johansson is in the news due to recent comments.

According to As If! Magazine, the 34 year old actress commented:

“You know, as an actor, I should be allowed to play any person, or any tree, or any animal because that is my job and the requirements of the job…. You know, I feel like it’s a trend in my business and it needs to happen for various social reasons, yet there are times it does get uncomfortable when it affects the art because I feel art should be free of restrictions.”

The actress has faced criticism in the past for taking the role of a trans male character (which she stepped down from). However, that is not the first instance ScarJo has been criticized- from playing Black Widow in “The Avengers” to her role in “Ghost In The Shell“- Scarlett Johansson is no stranger to this game. However, her recent comments come as a surprise. This is due to many in Hollywood seemingly accepting the political correct behaviours.

Personally, I think it’s about time someone as prominent as ScarJo commented on this issue. As an aspiring novelist, I’m a huge advocate for freedom in art. I’ve spoken against sensitivity readers, talked about ‘fixing’ problematic media and well, praised all things problematic. What’s wonderful about art is that it only works if there is freedom. A novel that is sanitized is not a work of literature. It is propaganda.

Likewise, great movies are not born out of political correctness, but an understanding and appreciation of cinematic language.

Acting is like that as well. It’s an art form in itself, that emphasizes empathy for the character the actor plays. Just as writers are required to get in the minds of their character, so are actors. Empathy is never about ‘diversity’ or ‘exclusive experiences.’ It’s about sharing humanity with each other. This is important to remember.

Artists must have complete freedom. This is the way true art works. I encourage all artists to advocate for their creative freedom. Whether you are a literary, performing or visual artist- you must value your freedom.

Of course, Scarlett Johansson’s comments have attracted ire. However, there is nothing ridiculous in what she is saying. Are we that backwards as a society- that we don’t trust an established actress to be empathetic in playing a role?

That’s my problem with this political correctness. There is no trust or freedom. Because of that, the end result is boring art no one cares about. Do we want that? I know I don’t!

Going forward, I wish ScarJo the best. I am happy that she spoke out, and advocates for artistic freedom. Let’s hope other big players take note.
