So, the latest teaser for BBC & HBO’s “His Dark Materials” is here, the new show based of Philip Pullman’s beloved trilogy. To be honest, I’m feeling a bit cold.
I’ve linked the trailer below, and I hope my explanation makes some sense.
Now, I’m a fan of the trilogy, even though I may think they are slightly overrated. Yet there is no denying Pullman has an intriging concept of “daemons” and can write beautifully. His books- which I highly recommend- are both horrific and exciting in its themes. Children’s literature has never been so dark yet inticing.
Yet watching the trailer, I felt none of that magic. It seemed sterile and cold, which may have been the intention- but for a character who is as multilayered as Lyra, you kind of want more. The production values weren’t that great, and considering we live in an age of The Crown or Game of Thrones– you expect better. I couldn’t get over the perception that under better direction, this teaser would be stronger.
His Dark Materials is not just a children’s fantasy trilogy, but also a mystery- as the series unfolds, you learn more about what makes the characters and the universe tick. The teaser sort of highlighted this, but it didn’t go further. Which is a shame, because the characterisation we got so far is rather shallow. Characters are not given names, locations remain unknown and the details are vague. However, I understand that there is only so much HBO can tell us within a minute. That being said, this teaser underwhelmed me.
There’s not a bone-chilling moment, or one that gets you to think. If anything, this show may be quite generic and lacking character or an overarching personality. Whilst I’m not dismissing this show based on a teaser, I hope future promotions manage to excite me. I’m also worried that the show will be afraid to engage with the darker themes of Pullman’s world- such as abuse and manipulation. Whilst those themes are confronting, they are necessary to the story.
Despite a stellar cast, no performances seem to be promising, despite some familiar acting faces.
For a series that deals with the soul, the teaser looks soulless.
What do you think about the trailer for the His Dark Materials show? Does it look to be a promising adaption? Comment below, I’d love to read your thoughts!
